Just a Memory: Mrs. Goldstein

1957. Mrs. Goldstein, the owner of a mom and pop grocery store on Anslie Avenue in Chicago used to call me "Dark Eyes." I was seven or eight years old and my mom would let we walk the two blocks to pick up a few things from the list she gave me. No worries then.

In my memory, my grandmother (my dad's mom) always smelled like the fish she loved to eat each and every day: salmon, tuna, herring, lox.
