MTE Education Luncheon Presentations

Michael's Welcome and Toast

Good Afternoon.

My name is Michael Horvich. My husband Gregory Maire and I are the founders of La Casa Norte’s More Than Ever Education Scholarship Fund.

Gregory … my husband of 41 years … lived with Alzheimer’s for 12 years. He died 4 years ago.

His passing was the catalyst for beginning the Casa Norte Annual Scholarship Luncheon and the More Than Ever Education Scholarship Fund supporting La Casa Norte’s Youth in College Program.

When Gregory and I were a young couple, like probably everyone in this room has done, we talked about what it would be like to win the lottery. We talked about how wonderful it would be to be able to do significant good for others with our winnings.

We talked about how that might look and we decided that probably the best gift one could offer, would be helping a person, who otherwise might not be able to afford it, to get a college education.

Before we knew it, Gregory and I were old, and we were at the point in our life where we could do significant good for others. We met with La Casa Norte and offered a bequest on our death for a scholarship fund as well as some of Gregory’s insurance money to begin the fund immediately.

Today we are honored to celebrate our quest with La Casa Norte, the students who are part of the Youth In College Program, and everyone here at this luncheon.

I would like to propose a toast using this year's theme: Education, The Key to Success.

To you, our honored guests and supporters of the La Casa Education Scholarship Fund. You are the keys which make the fund work.

To the staff and volunteers of La Casa Norte for the tireless hours you spend in making La Casa Norte’s work the success it is. You help provide the keys which keep the doors open and help provide safe secure housing and many supportive services available every day.

To Jill Meinzer, let her rest in peace, and her family who has created a new spoke in the Education Scholarship Fund Umbrella, which will allow even more students to have access to the keys to success.

To Gregory, who in his own quiet way helped begin the More Than Ever Education Fund with the simple turning the one key by which he lived his life … compassion for self and others.

Some of our Youth in College Program Students and Staff

To our hard-working students in the Youth in College Program who astonish us with their stories, hopes, desires, passions, and hard studies. You hold close the educational keys to your True North.

Finally, we are so pleased to be able to acknowledge and celebrate the first six graduates of the Youth in College Program, please stand when I call your name.

Ricardo Delgado: Bachelors in Education December 2018.

Hasanati Zarif: Associates in Human Sciences, May 2019.

Marcelo Sandoval: Bachelors in Business administration with a minor in Accounting. July 2019.

Marksaysa Lipscomb: Associates in Liberal Arts, August 2019.

Rebecca Poit Givens: Associates in Theater Arts, Spring 2019.

All of these students hold the keys to their aspirations and hopes as they walk proudly into their futures.

Gregory Maire Leadership Award Presentation

Kenilworth Union Church, Rev. Dr. William A. Evertsberg and MTE Co-Chair Patti Morelle

Gregory Maire, in whose memory the  Annual Education Luncheon was founded, was a leader in his professional field of Architecture and Interior Design.
The Gregory Maire Leadership Award was created to recognize Chicago Area leaders and organizations in fields which reflect the work of La Casa Norte: Confronting Homelessness, Providing Education Opportunities, Support in Dementia Care, and/or LBGTQ Issues.
In 2017 the first Gregory Maire Leadership Award went to The North Shore Exchange. The organization runs two resale shops in Chicago suburbs which feature luxury and contemporary women's designer fashions and accessories, as well as stunning furniture and home décor.
One hundred percent of their proceeds go to support Chicagoland charities providing human services for children and families below the poverty level.
Thanks to their shoppers, consignors and donors; they have given away $1,500,000 in grants and in-kind giving to well-deserving charities since they opened in 2013. Several of these grants have come to La Casa Norte. A third resale shop will open in June at the Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center in Skokie.
In 2018 the second Gregory Maire Leadership Award was given to The Full Bloomed Lotus Center for Self-Awareness and its founder Ramaa Krishnan.
The Full Bloomed Lotus has as it mission the integration of the intellectual strengths of the West with the intuitive gifts of the East. By addressing not just the mind, but the body and one’s energy as well, you can release your fears, and realize your dreams.
The Full Bloomed Lotus Center has supported La Casa Norte financially as well as with “hands on love.” They supported a student new winter coat drive, put together “college student care packages,” provided several meditation experiences for the Youth in College Program, and helped raise funds for the Education Scholarship Fund.
Here to present the third annual award … is my Annual Scholarship Fund Luncheon co-chairperson and friend Patti Morelle.

MTE EdFUND Luncheon May 3, 2017

The second annual was a success! Approximately 125 people attended, the keynote by Carmita Semann was stellar, three scholarship recipients shared the story of their coming out of homelessness to finding independence and are proud of their excellent grades in college thanks to La Casa Norte and The More Than Ever Education Fund.

Michael spoke briefly and then presented the North Shore Exchange with the first annual Gregory Maire Leadership Award. Following is the text of Michael's presentation including a 3-minute video of Michael and Gregory discussing the MTE EdFUND. Photos will be posted at a future date.

MTE EdFUND Luncheon- Wednesday 5/3/16
😀
Howard, Members of the Board, Sol, Staff and Volunteers of La Casa Norte … all of the young people here today … Family, Friends, Colleagues.
I want to share my comments with you today by COUNTING just a few of the ways I am GRATEFUL to La Casa Norte … and GRATEFUL to you!
😀 NUMBER ONE
Last year, at the inaugural MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND Luncheon in May 2016, we raised over $59,000 … and presented 3 scholarship awards.
Last December at our first annual holiday cohort celebration - we saw 6 more scholarship awards given, laptop computers gifted, and free housing contracts signed - bringing the number of student participants to 9.
😀 NUMBER TWO
I am OVERJOYED to be standing here before you again … a quick year later … at the SECOND ANNUAL  MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND Luncheon.
Today will find a total of 15 deserving students with scholarship awards and more, AND we couldn’t be more proud of these young people, who you will get to meet later.
😀 NUMBER THREE
As a brief recap … twelve years ago … during the 29th year of Gregory’s and my … 41-year relationship … we received the diagnosis of Gregory’s having Dementia, most likely Alzheimer’s Disease.
Knowing that the road ahead would be a difficult one, we recommitted our love to each other saying, “I  love you … NOW … MORE THAN EVER.” Thus the name of this fund …
😀 NUMBER FOUR
Much like people talk about what they would do if they won the lottery …  MANY YEARS ago, when Gregory and I were YOUNG …we talked about wishing we were able to help others in a significant way.
We talked about how this would look and decided that probably the best way to help was through supporting young people who were seeking to better themselves through an education … but who could not afford to do so.
Shortly before he died, when Gregory and I re-visited our finances and investments, we realized that NOW THAT WE WERE OLD, we WERE in the position of doing good for others, to pay forward our own good fortune.
Gregory and I have been involved with La Casa Norte … about to celebrate its 15th anniversary of doing good works … almost since its inception. With one call to Sol Flores, Executive Director of La Casa Norte, the MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND was born.
😀 NUMBER FIVE
Let's watch this three-minute video which documents a conversation about the fund, which I had with Gregory approximately six months before he died. You may notice that it is oversimplified, but at the time, that was the best Gregory was able to do.

Wow, a hard act to follow!
Back to counting how grateful I am …
😀 NUMBER SIX
The fund we are here to celebrate today is described as “established by Gregory L. Maire and Michael A. Horvich.”
Over time the Gregory Maire Scholarship Fund will be ONLY ONE of MANY funds under this umbrella.
When I leave this world, you will see a second, the Michael Horvich Scholarship Fund.
With support FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU and support from the business, religious, education, and social services communities … there will be MANY funds under this amazing umbrella legacy whose DEEDS will speak to the great potential available to La Casa Norte in providing educational opportunities to deserving young people.
I invite YOU … TO JOIN US under the MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION PROGRAM UMBRELLA - by establishing and naming a fund of your own!
Speak with Sol or me to find out how you might go about this.
😀 And last in my list of counting gratitudes, NUMBER SEVEN
Please raise your glass and join me in a TOAST.
1) …TO ALL OF YOU … who have supported today’s second annual celebration of the MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND
2) …TO A LONG LIFE for the fund for many years to come and it's ability to provide educational opportunities to young people confronting homelessness
3)… TO LA CASA NORTE for all their good works
4) … TO the  YOUNG PEOPLE here today and those who will be joining this adventure in the future … taking our support and love with them … as they study hard and met success in their endeavors
 … and lastly
5) … TO GREGORY … Who in many ways has made this all possible.
Thank you so much for being here today and for your support.
😀
Next, it is my pleasure and honor to present the FIRST ANNUAL Gregory Maire Leadership Award. In addition to the scholarship fund, this award is also part of his legacy to the future and is presented to others who, like himself, have led the way for change and opportunity.
I can think of NO BETTER RECIPIENT of the Gregory Maire Leadership Award … than … NORTH SHORE EXCHANGE.
Many of you may know of North Shore Exchange, in fact, you may have shopped there. The North Shore Exchange is Glencoe's nonprofit resale boutique offering an edited collection of upscale and luxury designer women's clothing and accessories, as well as beautiful furniture and home décor.
What you may not know is that ALL of their profits support organizations providing human services for children and families.
Since opening in March 2013, they have given away $700,000 in funds to well-deserving charities.
La Casa Norte was an early recipient of North Shore Exchange’s generosity and has continued to receive grants from them over the years to support our programming.
Last year, North Shore Exchange deepened their commitment to La Casa Norte by increasing their support to help expand the Youth in College program, the very program that works with the MORE THAN EVER scholarship recipients.
We are deeply grateful for the partnership we have in North Shore Exchange.
It is my honor to present the 2017 Gregory Maire Leadership award to North Shore Exchange Board President, Wendy Serrino and North Shore Exchange Philanthropy Chair Scott Javore.

SAVE THE DATE: The More Than Ever Education Fund Luncheon

If everyone who reads this blog would send just $10.00 in support of the More Than Ever Educational Fund, established by Gregory Maire and Michael Horvich, and administrated by the premier Chicago area not-for-profit La Casa Norte, we could instantly increase the funds raised for the fund by $5,000.00! If everyone who reads this blog would attend the luncheon, besides being great to see you there, we could instantly raise $50,000 for the MTE EdFund!

The scholarship fund enables youth, ages 17-25, confronting homelessness to receive tuition scholarship and other support in obtaining an education which will help improve their lives, that of their families, and of society in general!

During the event, guests will learn more about the work of La Casa Norte and hear a brief presentation from me as well as from our youth participants. There will be a guest speaker; Carmita Vaughn, Founder and President of the Surge Institute, on "Bringing Light to Education for Underserved Youth."

The First Annual Gregory Maire Leadership Award will be presented to The North Shore Exchange of Glencoe, Illinois, for their commitment to and work with La Casa Norte and the Youth in College Program.

A raffle table with wonderful prizes will be available and a delicious lunch will be served. Each guest will receive a fun trinket from Michael's Museum: A Curious Collection of Tiny Treasures, a permanent exhibit it at Chicago Children's Museum on Navy Pier.

Feedback on the MTE EdFund Inaugural Luncheon

So many people have given me such wonderful feedback on not only the luncheon but also the great work of La Casa Norte, the good works that Gregory and I have been able to support, and the moving documentary ALZHEIMER'S: A Love Story! Please to share some of them with you.

• • •

It was amazing to visit with Greg yesterday (through the documentary.) I felt as if I was right there with him and you along with all the joy and pain, love and angst. It propelled me to finally document Greg's home within my home and heart and pass it along to you. The luncheon was wonderful. The documentary truly awe inspiring. You are my amazing, amazing friend and I love you dearly. C

Congratulations on what sounds like a very successful event yesterday! I am only sorry that more of us weren’t able to join you. I heard (unanimously, I will add!) that the event was beautiful, emotional, and simply inspiring. Bravo! J

Just wanted to ket you know how much I enjoyed the luncheon yesterday. As I said to R and J it was one of the nicest and inspiring fundraisers I’ve ever been to, and there have been plenty.  It was great to view the film and I was so impressed with La Casa Norte, staff and clients. Needles to say there were many misty eyed moments throughout.  Thank you for having me as your guest. La Casa Norte will be on my early contribution list for Sure! D

Amazing presentations by Casa del Norte.  They have the energy and passion for success for the most worthwhile of causes. And your movie…….it’s clear why it has won so many awards.   The message is so very important, and easy for people to relate and respond to. Thank you for including us on this remarkable, very successful journey you have been on.  K

Michael, I was so moved by the movie, the More Than Ever event, and by you... You embody the purist form of love I have ever encountered, and it is something to behold❤️ J

The luncheon was a beautiful experience for both B and I. Everything about it was meaningful and touching, and I am so glad you invited us to share it with you. Thank you so very much. Love you. L

I'm in Chicago to honor my former boss and mentor, Gregory Maire, who passed away last year. He and his partner, Michael Horvich, set up the "More Than Ever" education foundation to help homeless youth through La Casa Norte in Evanston, IL. Today was the inaugural luncheon. We watched a documentary about Greg and Michael called "Alzeimer's: A Love Story," which just a won a best short film award at the Cannes Film Festival! Greg and Michael have and will continue to make a positive impact on many people's lives. To me and Amethel, they have been the best of friends and amazing examples of love, integrity, and generosity. K

Thank you: --for showing your devotion to Greg in such a real, raw, wrenching, loving, inspiring way. I'm still fairly drained from experiencing the film. It was a rare glimpse into true love, passion, pain, heartache, and commitment. Wow. --for your thoughtful comments immediately following the film.  I mean really, what can a person say after that? But you DID it.  You were masterful. --for your devotion to the mission of La Casa Norte.  --for including CCM in the event; it was an honor to be there today with M, J, and YOU.  --for agreeing to speak at my church in September.  I can't wait! We can talk about the program whenever you're ready: sooner or later, whatever makes you most comfortable. K

WOW! What a packed event and an emotional roller coaster - in such a positive way. It’s always a good day when I see you, but this was amazing. I am so inspired to live, love, and do more.  You are so inspiring, Michael.  You live life to the fullest and do all that you can.  I’m not sure how you do it.  Thanks for letting us all into your story.  That is truly your gift for all of us to benefit from - young and old alike! It was hard to watch your film without hugging you at the same time.  I had the urge to run over to the whole time.

I love you J

Hi Bebe. Just a quick note to thank you and tell you how beautiful the the day was...the lunch, the documentary, your comments to the group, and the beautiful work that Casa Norte is doing. You're fucking fantastic...and so is Casa Norte!   Congratulations on today. The film was as I expected, a magnificent tribute to u and Greg, and your life together. Your speech was so moving, as were your tears. Also, Casa Norte, an excellent choice for your support. We were so happy to be a part of this special day for u and Greg. 😘😘 Such a nice lunch! Very moving on all levels. Congrats. J

Thank you for the invite.  I enjoyed myself and was so impressed with Casa Norte and your scholarship.  I happily donated by the way.  Hope all is well and the video was beautiful. R

The luncheon was AMAZING!! Elegant, well run, the kids laid me out - weren't they something? Your talk was wonderful - so heartfelt and inclusive. I was sitting there absolutely sobbing, clutching Greg's Teddy Bear, but it was so good to see him again. I remember how much I loved visiting him! Met up with that one lady's family who used to sit at Greg's table. Saw others I knew, too, (the Gay Family, of course, but others from other walks of life) besides neighbors. A great turnout for a great cause and the movie added so much. Really well done - not just from my bias of loving you and Greg but from my experience of making films for decades. Those students are talented!! Do you have post-let down or are you, I hope, filled with a deep sense of satisfaction?? Bravo - I know it takes a lot to produce something like that. Love you, S

ADDED JULY 14, 2016

It was so moving, Michael. A beautiful testimonial to your love and Greg's memory. I loved the images in the film of him playing the piano. So happy the documentary is receiving such recognition everywhere -- and at Cannes! You're a star, and Greg was so lucky to have you, and you him obviously. So glad I came. Mom is here with me now and we're enjoying the centerpiece, which is a nice memento for me. J

Thank you for the honor of inviting me to the "More Than Ever" Education Luncheon honoring your and Gregory's legacy. La Casa Norte is doing wonderful work in helping homeless youth. I know what important work this is because my son-in-law was in this position when he was in his teens. God bless you for the help you are giving these young people. Blessings, K

It was truly gratifying to join good friends in support La Casa Norte's fundraiser recently, and simultaneously honor Michael Horvich and his late husband's memory, Harvard trained architect Gregory Maire. And our good friends. We were all able to view a very moving short documentary, "Alzheimer's A Love Story," beautifully and sadly revealing the joys and struggles of their relationship in the latter years of Gregory's life. Alzheimer's is a true challenge in my own family and to millions of others. Equally important is the mission of La Casa Norte around homeless youth. Thanks Michael for reminding us to keep these issues at our minds' forefront. D

MTE EdFund Luncheon: Part II

The following are my comments from the luncheon.
Delivery time was 7+ minutes.

MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND
Inaugural Luncheon - Wednesday 5/18/16
WOW
That documentary is a tough act to follow. Reliving it always causes my emotions to rise to the surface and it’s not that I am afraid to cry in front of you … it is just that it is very difficult to cry and talk at the same time.
If I need to, I might stop, take a few deep breaths, but then continue. IF I AM ABLE to get through to the end of my thoughts, I will ask you to raise a glass of Prosecco in a toast.
😀
Victoria … Members of the Board, Sol, Staff, and Volunteers of La Casa Norte … Student Scholarship Recipients … Family and Friends
I am HONORED, is it humble to say HUMBLED?, and a bit OVERWHELMED standing before you today.
Welcome and thank you for being here to support the MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND as administered by La Casa Norte.
😀
Twelve years ago, during the 29th year of our relationship, Gregory and I received the diagnosis of his having Dementia, most likely Alzheimer’s Disease. Knowing that the road ahead would be a difficult one, we recommitted our love to each other saying, “I love you NOWMORE THAN EVER.”
To this day, since Gregory died on October 4th, in the 41st year of our relationship, I find that I think of him ALL the time, speak OF him and TO him as if he still was present (if only in spirit,) continue to use the word “WE,” continue to speak of him in the present tense, and continue to love him … MORE THAN EVER.
Yes there IS continued grief and sorrow in the death of a best friend, confident, lover, soul mate, husband … especially after so many years together …but PLEASE believe me when I say that today the feelings of JOY far outweigh the sorrow.
😀
Gregory and I have been involved with La Casa Norte almost since its inception. We have, like many of you, made donations, attended galas, been part of the silent auctions.
Over time, many clothing donations have been made to La Casa Norte … as I outgrew my clothing … and as Gregory … always the tall thin one … maintained his wardrobe which needed to reflect his profession as high-end architect and interior designer.
Both Gregory and I imagined with joy, the vision of a young person, coming to the “closet” at La Casa Norte to find a suit for an upcoming interview, only to discover one of Gregory’s donated suits by Armani, Ferragamo, or Gucci waiting for them.
😀
Much like people talk about what they would do if they won the lottery, MANY YEARS ago, when we were YOUNG, Gregory and I talked about wishing we could help others in a significant way. We talked about how this would look and decided that probably the best way to help was through supporting young people who were seeking to better themselves through an education … but who could not afford to do so.
Last year, when Gregory and I re-visited our wills and re-evaluated our finances and investments, we realized that NOW THAT WE WERE OLD, we WERE in the position of doing good for others, to pay forward our own good fortune.
I called Sol Flores, Executive Director of La Casa Norte, and long time friend, and told her about our decision to make a sizable bequest in our will to La Casa Norte for the purpose of providing funds for educational support to the youth with whom they work. That call was the catalyst for the MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND and this inaugural luncheon.
With the help of a portion of Gregory’s life insurance, I am pleased that we are able to begin providing scholarships and other forms of education assistance NOW and do not have to wait for the bequest to take effect upon my death.
Gregory and I will continue to support the scholarships given this year, over the next three years, to make sure that the youth beginning their studies will be able to see them through to their completion while the MTE Ed Fund continues to grow and establish itself.
I am SO grateful that La Casa Norte will be helping us fulfill this dream of ours. WE LOVE …  EVERYTHING about La Casa Norte!
😀
One thought on using the term “homeless youth.” First I want to change the term using a people first descriptor … not homeless youth but rather YOUTH confronting homelessness.
The label serves its purpose in letting us identify the situation in which these young people find themselves. They do not always know where they will spend the night. They may not know where their next meal will be coming from. They work helping to support their families while trying to continue their education. They look to the future for an improved place in life.
… but these youth are SO MUCH MORE than just “homeless.” I would not want to use the label homeless to classify them and then for us to just move on.
Like Gregory, who was NOT a VICTIM of Alzheimer’s Disease but rather a HERO … these young people are not VICTIMS of homelessness, which is only one descriptor of who they currently are, but they are amazing HEROS and examples of success as well!
😀
This inaugural event today, wears Gregory’s and my faces. The MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND is described as “established by Gregory L. Maire and Michael A. Horvich.” Over time the Gregory Maire and Michael Horvich Scholarship Fund will be ONLY ONE of many funds under the umbrella MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND.
With support FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU and support from the business, religious, education, and social services communities … there will be many other funds under this amazing umbrella legacy whose DEEDS will speak to the great potential available to La Casa Norte. I invite you to join us under the umbrella.
😀
PLEASE RAISE YOUR GLASS AND JOIN ME IN A FIVE POINT TOAST:
TO ALL OF YOU … who have supported today’s inaugural celebration of the MORE THAN EVER EDUCATION FUND
…TO A LONG LIFE for the fund and it's ability to provide educational opportunities to youth confronting homelessness
TO LA CASA NORTE for their good works
TO THE YOUTH here today and the youth joining this adventure, who will take our support and love with them as they study hard and are successful in their endeavors
… and … TO GREGORY … who in many ways has made this all possible. Thank you so much for being here today and for your support.
